You, and the other players play as one team trying to reach a highest possible Total Score without losing your 5 lives. Every time you reject a challenge, you lose 1 chicken, and you can only get new chickens by completing a challenge on the "Are you serious?" level. This creates a perfect balance in the game and makes people take risks to help the team survive.
